Tech Support Scam Explained

Tech support scams are deceptive tactics used by scammers to trick individuals into believing that their computer or device has a serious problem, such as a virus or malware infection. The scammers pose as representatives from legitimate tech companies, offering to fix these non-existent issues for a fee. They may contact potential victims via phone calls, pop-up messages, or emails, using scare tactics to prompt immediate action.

How It Works

  1. Contact: The scammer reaches out, claiming to be from a reputable tech company.

  2. Scare Tactic: They inform the victim about a critical problem with their computer.

  3. Solution Offer: The scammer offers to fix the issue for a fee and may request remote access to the victim's device.

  4. Payment: Victims are instructed to pay through untraceable methods like gift cards or wire transfers.

Prevention Tips

  • Do Not Respond to unsolicited tech support calls or messages.

  • Never Share personal or financial information with unverified individuals.

  • Update and Protect your computer with legitimate antivirus software.

  • Contact Companies Directly if you suspect a scam using official contact information.
